The extended essay is a part of the core as well as the CAS (Creativity, activity, service) and theory of knowledge of the International Baccalaureate.
This is a work of analysis, synthesis and argumentation about a specific topic for which learners must write 4,000 words.
The extended essay allows them to explore a particular topic of interest and to become familiar with the kind of independent research and writing skills required at university level.
